0 0 0 0 0 00 00 0 The State Columbia, S.C. COLLEGE FOOTBALL: CLEMSON VS. N.C. STATE Saturday, October 2, 1993 5C St Game Clemson offense vs. N.C.
State defense: It's been all or nothing on offense. If the Tigers pass, they can't run. If they can run, they can't pass. Clemson ranks last in the ACC petotalottense with week, 291.3 Derrick yards Witherspoon gained more rushing yards (111) than the entire team had in its two previous games (92). The Tigers will need a little more of such ball-control offense to outlast the Wolfpack.
And they'll need a return to the passing attack they had in the first two games in which Patrick Sapp ranked 29th in pass efficiency. He might be hindered by the condition of Terry Smith and Jason Davis. Clemson's top two receivers both may be less than 100 percent. Sapp played that way last week. Completing 1 of 10 attempts last week and 2 of 14 last season against the Wolfpack, he believes he has a point to prove this week.
If healthy, Louis Solomon will also play. N.C. State starts well but has shows, first-half no finishing points kick. through Allowing three games, the Wolfpack has given up 48 in the second half. It also hasn't peens as stingy as in years past.
State has allowed 161.3 yards rushing, 176 passing and 19.3 points per game. N.C. State offense vs. Clemson defense: N.C. State has found balance with two quarterbacks Geoff Bender and Terry Harvey.
The Wolfpack is averaging 209 yards passing per game and 156 yards rushing. Tailback Gary Downs' 82.7 rushing yards per game rank 44th nationally. Last week, Bender completed 10 of 11 before injuring his shoulder. Both target split end Eddie Goines for the big play. He has caught 13 passes for a 23.6 yard average and three of the Wolfpack's four TD catches.
Ray Griffis has the other. The Tigers must watch the backs on pass patterns too. Fullback Ledel George has 10 catches. Clemson needs to apply pressure on the pass, visibly absent so far. In three games, the Tigers have two sacks.
They have improved in every other aspect since the FSU game, shutting down the pass more effectively and the holing up the run. Kicking game: Clemson's higher goalposts have stopped two possible field goal attempts, but will they deter N.C. State's Steve Videtich. He's 4-of-4 with a long of 38. Nelson Welch is 1-of-3 with some improved punting.
As for returns, Clemson ranks seventh nationally in punt return yardage. If the defense plays well, this could alter any field position battle. Crucial matchups: Clemson's secondary monitoring Goines. Intangibles: The recent series has followed a distinct pattern. Clemson won Georgia Tech at Florida State When: Noon Where: Tallahassee, Fla.

The Virginia secondary has twice as many interceptions (12) as any team in the ACC. Pick: Virginia 43, Ohio 10. Texas- El Paso at North Carolina When: 1:30 p.m.
Where: Chapel Hill, N.C. TV: None. Line: North Carolina by 37. Records: Texas-El Paso 0. 1- North Carolina 4-1, 2-1.

Curtis Johnson and Leon Johnson rank first and second in the conference in rushing, and the Tar Heels are fourth nationally with analysis five straight. Then, N.C. State won three straight.
Clemson followed with three straight victories before the Wolfpack won last season's game. Clemson will win if: The Tigers get the passing they had in the first two games and the running and defensive intensity they had in the past game. N.C. State will win if: Goines has a big day and the Wolfpack wins the turnover battle. MARK R.
